Middle School Paraprofessional (Grades 5–8)

The paraprofessional provides instructional, behavioral, and clerical support to teachers and students in a middle school setting serving grades 5–8. Under the direction of certified teachers and building administrators, the paraprofessional assists in delivering educational programs, supporting individual student needs, and fostering a positive, inclusive, and academically focused learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers with classroom instruction, organization, and management.
  • Work one-on-one or with small groups of students to reinforce academic concepts and support skill development.
  • Support students with special needs as outlined in Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 plans.
  • Monitor and support student behavior, encouraging positive decision-making, self-management, and appropriate social interactions.
  • Assist students in staying organized, completing assignments, and developing study and executive functioning skills.
  • Provide supervision and support during class transitions, lunch periods, assemblies, field trips, and other school activities.
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain instructional materials, technology, and classroom resources.
  • Document student observations, academic progress, and behavioral data as directed by supervising staff.
  • Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and support staff to meet student needs.
  • Foster a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment that promotes student engagement and success.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all district policies, procedures, and professional standards.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or two years of postsecondary education preferred.
  • Must meet applicable state or district paraprofessional certification requirements (e.g., ParaPro Assessment).
  • Prior experience working with adolescents in an educational, recreational, or youth development setting preferred.
  • Ability to support students with academic, emotional, behavioral, and social needs.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with middle school students while maintaining appropriate boundaries and expectations.
  • Flexibility to work with diverse student populations and across multiple classrooms or programs as needed.

Working Conditions

  • May include physical activity such as standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Positions are available in multiple district buildings, with placements based on student needs and staffing priorities.
  • May work with students requiring additional academic, behavioral, emotional, or social support.
  • May be reassigned to other buildings or programs based on district and student needs.
